Hay tres especies africanas: el gorila (Gorilla gorilla), el chimpanc\u00e9 (Pan trogladytes) y el bonobo o chimpanc\u00e9 pigmeo (Pan paniscus). El cuarto miembro de los grandes simios, el orangut\u00e1n (Pongo pygmaeus), se encuentra en Sumatra y Borneo. Los rasgos faciales de los simios son individualistas y expresivos como los humanos. Los grandes simios caminan a cuatro patas y tambi\u00e9n pueden andar bastante bien de forma b\u00edpeda. Las subespecies son;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gorila occidental de llanura. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Este es el m\u00e1s peque\u00f1o y abundante que se encuentra en las selvas tropicales de las tierras bajas de Camer\u00fan, Rep\u00fablica Centroafricana, Guinea Ecuatorial, Gab\u00f3n y el Congo. Los machos pesan 140 kg y las hembras 75 kg. Todos tienen mand\u00edbulas y dientes peque\u00f1os con cara ancha. Los machos maduros tienen una gran mancha casi blanca que cubre las ancas y los muslos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gorila de las tierras bajas orientales. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Estos son los m\u00e1s grandes, con machos que pesan alrededor de 165 kg. Se encuentran principalmente en parches aislados de selvas tropicales en Zaire y las regiones fronterizas adyacentes de Ruanda y Uganda. Las caras son estrechas y el cuerpo tiene pelaje negro y espeso.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Gorila de monta\u00f1a. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Estos se encuentran en grave peligro de extinci\u00f3n, quedan muy pocos en estado salvaje. Se encuentran en la cordillera de los volcanes Virunga, en la frontera de Ruanda, la Rep\u00fablica Democr\u00e1tica del Congo y Uganda. Los machos pesan alrededor de 160 kg, mientras que las hembras pesan alrededor de 85 kg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Las gorilas hembras viven en harenes custodiados y estrictamente controlados por un macho espalda plateada. En el grupo tambi\u00e9n se encuentra un hijo joven adulto de entre 5 y 8 a\u00f1os. La vida en un har\u00e9n de gorilas suele ser pac\u00edfica y relajada. Los gorilas de monta\u00f1a pasan un tercio del d\u00eda aliment\u00e1ndose. El resto del d\u00eda lo pasan descansando y tomando el sol. Construyen nidos en los \u00e1rboles o en el suelo para dormir por la noche. El l\u00edder espalda plateada dicta a d\u00f3nde va su grupo, qu\u00e9 hace y cu\u00e1ndo. Cada una de las compa\u00f1eras est\u00e1 vinculada solo a \u00e9l y a sus cr\u00edas, y no entre s\u00ed. Las hembras no est\u00e1n emparentadas y se las adquiere en la adolescencia de sus grupos parentales. La competencia masculina por las hembras es intensa, lo que a menudo puede llevar a feroces batallas entre padres e hijos o compa\u00f1eros. El pelaje suele ser negro, pero puede variar del marr\u00f3n al pelirrojo. Los machos pesan entre 40 y 55 kg, mientras que las hembras pesan unos 30 kg. Se encuentran en selvas tropicales y tambi\u00e9n en sabanas h\u00famedas y a veces en sabanas de acacia. Se encuentran en Guinea, Sierra Leona Este, Uganda y al norte del r\u00edo Congo. Est\u00e1n m\u00e1s emparentados con los seres humanos, como demuestran los estudios de ADN. Los chimpanc\u00e9s son omn\u00edvoros cuya dieta var\u00eda. Se agrupan de 20 a m\u00e1s de 100 individuos, pero a menudo deambulan solos o en peque\u00f1os grupos en busca de alimentos. Se encuentran en selvas tropicales de tierras bajas y bosques pantanosos en la RDC al sur del r\u00edo Congo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La dieta del bonobo consiste principalmente en frutas.
