Mount Elgon National Park Uganda

Mount Elgon National Park is a remarkable UNESCO Biosphere Reserve straddling the border of eastern Uganda and western Kenya, offering travelers a rare blend of dramatic landscapes, rich biodiversity, and deep cultural heritage. Officially gazetted in 1992, the park covers approximately 1,110 square kilometres, making it one of Uganda’s most ecologically significant protected areas.

At the heart of the park lies Mount Elgon, an ancient extinct shield volcano estimated to be over 24 million years old—one of the oldest volcanic mountains in Africa. Once believed to be Africa’s tallest mountain, Mount Elgon has gradually eroded over millennia and today rises to 4,321 meters above sea level, ranking as:

  • 4th highest mountain in East Africa

  • 8th highest mountain in Africa

Its vast caldera—over 40 kilometres wide—is the largest intact volcanic caldera in the world, making Mount Elgon a truly unique geological wonder.

Culture & Communities Around Mount Elgon

Mount Elgon National Park is not only rich in natural beauty but also deeply rooted in living culture. On the Ugandan side, the park is home to two main communities:

  • Bagisu (Bamasaba) – Known for their strong cultural identity and traditional ceremonies. They regard Mount Elgon as the embodiment of their ancestral founder Masaba.

  • Sabiny – Primarily subsistence farmers living on the higher slopes.

The fertile volcanic soils around Mount Elgon support Arabica coffee farming, particularly among the Bagisu people. Mount Elgon Arabica coffee is internationally prized, making community visits a rewarding cultural experience for visitors.

Climate in Mount Elgon National Park

Mount Elgon National Park enjoys a cooler and wetter climate compared to much of Uganda, ideal for hiking and nature-based tourism.

  • Annual rainfall: Over 1,270 mm

  • Dry seasons:

    • June – August

    • December – March

  • Rainfall: Can occur year-round due to altitude

The consistent moisture supports lush vegetation, waterfalls, and permanent rivers that feed surrounding regions, making Mount Elgon a vital water catchment area.
